Bobcat Donation Helps National Group Train Search And Rescue Dogs

Bobcat Co. is partnering with the National Disaster Search Dog Foundation by supplying equipment used to create and maintain realistic training environments at the organization’s “Doggy Disneyland” training center in Santa Paula, Calif.

“We are excited to partner with the Search Dog Foundation and help support their mission to provide search and rescue training for dogs and their handlers,” said Laura Ness Owens, vice president of marketing, communication and public affairs at Doosan Bobcat North America.

Bobcat recently donated an E35 excavator and a variety of track loader attachments to the Search Dog Foundation. The organization used the excavator and a Bobcat T750 compact track loader it already owned, to clear brush, do trenching, road maintenance, move rubble to modify and create training courses for dogs and handlers at the 125-acre center.

“We like to call it Doggy Disneyland,” says Denise Sanders, senior director of communications for the SDF.

“Without proper equipment, we would not be able to move anything around here on our campus. We’re dealing with thousands of pounds of concrete, a lot of brush, sometimes downed trees, and there is no way that we could do our jobs without being able to move those things safely and efficiently,” Sanders said in a video released by Bobcat. “The Bobcat equipment is really going to be able to help us build up our training center even more.”

The courses are designed to simulate conditions in various types of natural and manmade disasters, and include wrecked cars, train cars, homes, and piles of rubble that resemble ruined buildings or collapsed roads.

Many of the rescue dogs are rescues themselves, said Sanders, who is a dog handler, too.

“When a dog comes through our gates, oftentimes they are from a shelter or a rescue, the majority of our dogs are rescues. Sometimes they are from an owner who just can’t handle their energy and drive,” Sanders said. “What’s interesting is the traits that landed them in the shelter, are the ones that we look for. They are the ones that we need in a search dog.”

The dogs are tested to see if they have what it takes to do the job, she said.

“We look for intense drive. That innate drive to do....clcik source for full story
